Al-Mustadrak of al-Hâkim and al-Dhahabî’s Talkhîs

The following two articles are taken from The first is a question answered by Dr. Hatim al-Awni, a well-known, specialized scholar of Hadith who teaches at Umm al-Quraa University in Makkah. The second is taken from Dr. Bashshâr `Awwâd Ma`rûf’s introduction to his critical edition of Jami’ at-Tirmidhi. He is another leading, well-known scholar of Hadith. Both of these shed considerable light on al-Hakim’s Mustadrak as well as al-Dhahabi’s Talkhis which is a summary of al-Mustadrak: Continue reading

“I never saw Allah’s “Messenger show greater concern for a day of fasting…than `Âshûrâ’…”

Sheikh Nâyif al-Hamad, presiding judge at the Rimâh District Courthouse

Ibn `Abbâs relates: “I never saw Allah’s Messenger show greater concern for a day of fasting, seeking its virtue over other days, than he did for the Day of `Âshûrâ’ and the month (of Ramadan).”

This is an authentic hadîth related in Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2006) and Sahîh Muslim (1132).

Some Existing Manuscripts Predating al-Muwatta’

The following is taken from, but I have taken the liberty of correcting some spelling errors and adding commments in double brackets:

Question: Can you kindly list some Islamic documents concerning either hadîth or Islamic Law, that are extant and that predate the Muwatta’ of Imam Mâlik?

Answered by Sheikh Muhammad al-Qannâs

The Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to collect all the sayings and actions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and relate them among themselves and memorise them.

Some of the Companions used to keep written records during the era of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Writings from this time period include the document of Abû Bakr al-Siddîq regarding Zakâh, the document of `Ali b. Abî Tâlib discussing the age classifications of camels and something about injury compensation, and the document authored by `Abd Allah b. `Amr b, al-`Âs entitled al-Sahîfah al-Sâdiqah. Weak Narrators in Tafsīr ibn Abī Ḥātim

Weak Narrators in Tafsīr ibn Abī Ḥātim

It has been some time since I have been able to post. I am presently far too bogged down with work to be posting these days, however I came across a fascinating article that I felt I should share. It relates to a famous Tafsīr work authored by Imām `Abd ar-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim ar-Rāzī, the son and student of the famous Abū Ḥātim ar-Rāzī. His two main teachers were his father and his father’s close associate, Abū Zur`ah ar-Rāzī.

For those of you who are not familiar, Tafsīr ibn Abī Ḥātim ranks as the most important collection of Tafsīr narrations after Tafsīr aṭ-Ṭabarī. Continue reading
